VALENCIA, Calif.: As aging transformers face increasing electrical and environmental stress across global power networks, traditional monitoring methods, such as periodic sampling, leave blind spots that can lead to unexpected failures. The timeframe for transformer replacements has skyrocketed and the consequences of downtime range from costly to catastrophic, creating an urgent need for reliable, actionable asset health data supplied by continuous monitoring to ensure high levels of reliability.

H2scan (www.h2scan.com), a leader in hydrogen sensor technology, today announced a significant expansion to its GRIDSCAN® sensor product line with the addition of the GRIDSCAN 5010, 5015 and 5000 HP. These new products provide additional capabilities for utilities and industrial customers seeking to improve performance, reliability and protection of their transformer fleets. The product line introduces breakthrough advancements in accuracy, measurement range, availability and environmental resilience to better manage assets across demanding environments ranging from underground vaults to offshore platforms.

"Our customers need transformer monitoring that works for all their applications," said David Meyers, CEO of H2scan. "The expanded GRIDSCAN lineup delivers this versatility—from detecting trace hydrogen amounts for early intervention, to accurately measuring elevated concentrations in transformers under high electrical stress. The field-proven technology of the GRIDSCAN 5000, combined with a newly expanded portfolio, helps maintenance teams implement timely remedies, improving safety and reducing costly downtime."

The expanded GRIDSCAN product line includes:

GRIDSCAN 5010: Featuring an innovative sensor design that provides perpetual auto-calibration allowing it to capture sudden and very brief hydrogen excursions serving demanding applications while maintaining a high level of accuracy. Available in both in-gas and in-oil versions, this solution ensures utilities never miss critical early warning signs of transformer deterioration.

GRIDSCAN 5015: Specifically designed for transformers experiencing substantial gassing, such as those in renewable energy facilities with high harmonics loading. With an impressive measurement range of 250 PPM to 40,000 PPM in nitrogen gas blankets, the GRIDSCAN 5015 safely extends high-performance monitoring capabilities to transformers with significantly higher hydrogen concentrations.

GRIDSCAN 5000 HP: This high-performance enhancement to the original GRIDSCAN 5000 delivers twice the accuracy of the standard GRIDSCAN 5000 for more sensitive applications. Available in both in-gas and in-oil versions, the GRIDSCAN 5000 HP can detect potential transformer issues before they escalate into costly failures.

Like the original GRIDSCAN 5000, these products feature IP68 ingress protection, high EMI/RFI rating, requires no calibration or maintenance for 10+ years, and includes Modbus, or Modbus RTU communication options with optional 4-20mA outputs.

The expanded GRIDSCAN lineup delivers several key advantages compared to traditional monitoring methods:

  • Cost-effective implementation: Delivers monitoring capabilities for a fraction of the cost of alternative data collection methods
  • Superior monitoring: Delivers 24/7 continuous transformer monitoring with auto-calibration capabilities that eliminate monitoring downtime and maintenance costs
  • Hydrogen-specific measurements in oil and gas: Provides precise key gas (hydrogen) sensing without sensitivity to other gases
  • Enhanced accuracy: Offers precision measurement across a wide range of hydrogen concentrations
  • Easy installation: Designed for straightforward retrofitting of legacy equipment without infrastructure changes while fitting seamlessly onto new transformers
  • Robust design: Features IP68 ingress protection and high EMI/RFI ratings for functionality in harsh environments throughout a broad temperature range
  • Maintenance-free operation: Requires no periodic calibration or regular maintenance for 10+ years, reducing the total cost of ownership

GRIDSCAN sensors are ideal for a wide range of applications, ranging from large transmission transformers through small distribution transformers, vault transformers, alternative energy installations, data centers, offshore platforms and transportation systems, among others. The GRIDSCAN sensors are an integral part of a comprehensive transformer monitoring solution, such as the new HY-VAULT™ system for underground vault transformers, also introduced by H2scan. HY-VAULT addresses critical safety and infrastructure challenges for utility companies managing aging underground vault transformers in urban environments.
