Toronto healthtech company Able Innovations Inc. partners with leading healthcare institutions across Canada to reduce strain on frontline workers with Canadian-made robotics technology

TORONTO: Able Innovations, the world’s first automated patient transfer technology provider, announced its flagship device, the ALTA Platform®, being evaluated at five prominent hospitals in major hubs across Canada, from Halifax to Vancouver.

Made in Canada for Canadians, the ALTA Platform is being implemented in hospitals from coast to coast and is designed to support thousands of healthcare workers and patients. Able Innovations has received support from, and collaborated with FedDev Ontario, NRC-IRAP and the Province of Ontario to develop and manufacture the technology in Canada.

On average, patient transfers require 2-8 frontline staff members, resulting in frequent injuries and contributing to $20B in annual healthcare costs. Able's ALTA Platform automates the transfer process with state-of-the-art physical AI, reducing physical strain on nurses, porters, and personal support workers (PSWs), while ensuring a dignified patient experience.

“Growing up with a mother who worked in frontline care, I witnessed her get injured while transferring residents and patients in and out of their beds. Since then, I’ve been seeking ways to reduce the burden while restoring dignity to patients,” said Jayiesh Singh, CEO of Able Innovations. “We are seeing a rise in demand for solutions that help our front-line staff, and we hope to grow our manufacturing footprint in Canada to address the growing need.”

The implementation of the ALTA at Bruyère Health in Ottawa and St. Joseph's Health Care London has been supported by organizations including AGE-WELL, OBIO, and the Centre for Aging + Brain Health Innovation (CABHI).

The evaluation of the ALTA Platform has been supported by the CAN Health Network through a “triple-edge project” involving University Health Network (UHN), Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH) and Nova Scotia Health (NSH).

“We are excited to support made-in-Canada solutions to address the most pressing needs facing our health care system,” said Dr. Dante Morra, Founder and Chair, CAN Health Network.

“Transferring patients laterally is the most labour-intensive task in healthcare,” said Dr. Gaurav Puri, Board Member at Able Innovations and Chief of Emergency Medicine at Southlake Regional Hospital. “With greater demand for healthcare, and increasing frontline shortages, I see great potential in ALTA Platform’s ability to allow facilities to do more with less.”

"I'm finding the patient transfer process with ALTA to be a lot easier and less physically demanding compared to manual transfers such as ceiling lifts,” said Nicholas Lamothe, Porter at Bruyère Health.“As a single-operator device, it shows promise in increasing hospital workflow efficiency by reducing the need for multiple staff during transfers. Oftentimes, trying to find additional staff to assist can be difficult.”

The ALTA Platform highlights how innovation can directly address key healthcare challenges, like improving workflows while supporting system sustainability.

Looking towards the future, Able Innovations looks to deploy the ALTA Platform across North America and offer solutions that further reduce the burden for healthcare front-line staff.

About Able Innovations:
